Earlier this year I started a brief series of blogs looking at PSALM 139. This song has been regarded by many as one of the most beautiful and profound pieces of poetry ever written. Ultimately, of course, it is the Word of GOD…a revelation of Him…but also His revelation about us.
Do you remember how the opening verses unveil for us the OMNISCIENCE of GOD, meaning simply He knows everything about everything and everyone?!
”O Lord, you have searched me and you know me”-v.1
From v.7 onwards we discover the OMNIPRESENCE of GOD,
“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?”
GOD is everywhere present in the universe He has created. What a source of comfort when we need Him…but also of terror for those wanting to hide from Him?
Thirdly, vv.13-18, we are reminded of the OMNIPOTENCE of GOD. He has all-power. This is displayed most obviously in His works of creation, universally…and here personally and individually.
“For you created my inmost being, you knit me together in my mother’s womb”-v.13
At this Christmas time may this remind us of the Unborn Child whose existence is so precarious still in our society. Yet, every such Child is wanted by GOD and bears the mark of His unique dignity and sanctity. At this time of the year we are in a special way reminded that the Almighty Lord who gives life to everyone in this way also took such life into union with Himself, the eternal Son of GOD made flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary. The Creator became one of us to be our Saviour.
“…you are to give him the name JESUS, because he will save his people from their sins”-Matthew 1:21
